Programme Overview and Structure

The Kannur University M.A. Arabic Language and Literature Programme is a four-semester postgraduate course delivered in affiliated colleges under the Choice Based Credit and Semester System (CBCSS) within an Outcome Based Education (OBE) framework, implemented from the 2023 admission. Spread across two academic years with 18 weeks per semester, it requires a total of 80 credits — a minimum of 64 from core courses and 12 to 16 from electives and open electives, with no single course exceeding 5 credits and the project and viva together carrying up to 10 credits. Evaluation is split 20% continuous assessment and 80% end-semester examination, graded through an indirect grading system on a scale from A+ (Outstanding) to F (Fail), with a minimum grade point of 4 required to pass any course and a minimum OGPA of 4 needed to earn the degree. Attendance is set at 75% (73% for female students, with maternity leave provisions), and syllabus design follows Bloom's revised taxonomy across four modules per course to ensure progressive cognitive development from remembering to creating.

Curriculum Content Across Semesters

The curriculum builds Arabic language mastery systematically across the four semesters. Semester I covers Applied Grammar and Morphology (Part 1), Proficiency in Spoken Arabic (MSA), Drama and Short Story, Arabic Literature in India, with electives such as Functional Writing, Arabic for Media and Journalism, or Modern Essay, Autobiography and Travelogue. Semester II continues with Applied Grammar (Part 2), Classical Arabic Literature, Applied Rhetoric-Prosody-Linguistics, ICT in Arabic Language Teaching and Learning, and a Study Tour Report, offering electives in Mahjar, Maghreb, or Gulf Literature. Semester III focuses on Medieval Arabic Literature, the Modern Arab World, Modern Literary Criticism, Research Methodology, and an open elective on Translation and Secretarial Practice. Semester IV concludes with Novel Literature, Modern Arabic Poetry, Advanced Translation, an elective on Women's, Children's, or Resistance Literature in Arabic, and a Project with Dissertation and comprehensive Viva Voce. Together, these courses combine linguistic proficiency, literary appreciation, cultural knowledge, translation skills, ICT integration, and research methodology.

Programme Outcomes and Evaluation Framework

The programme is designed to produce graduates with mastery of Arabic language and its practical application, expertise in Arabic grammar and rhetoric, proficiency in written and spoken Arabic (MSA), competence in translation between Arabic, English, and Malayalam, and a comprehensive understanding of Arabic literary movements from the pre-Islamic era through the Umayyad, Abbasid, medieval, and modern periods, including Arabic literary contributions from India, Kerala, the Mahjar diaspora, Maghreb, and Gulf regions. Students also develop skills in research, ICT-supported Arabic teaching, journalism, secretarial practice, and legal and commercial translation. Assessment combines written examinations set by external experts and centrally valued, continuous internal evaluation through assignments, seminars, tests, and vivas, and a final dissertation of about 40 pages submitted in A4 format with a supervisor's certificate, evaluated in a 20:80 ratio between continuous and end-semester components. Grievance redressal mechanisms operate at both college and university levels, and rank certificates are awarded up to the third rank based on OGPA, ensuring transparency, academic rigour, and career readiness for graduates entering teaching, translation, media, research, or further doctoral study.
